EAGLES SYNDROME (back to contents)

INTRODUCTION

· W.W.EAGLE [OTOLARYNGIOLOGIST] FIRST FOUND
THIS SYNDROME
· IT IS A SYNDROME IN WHICH THE NORMAL LENGTH
OF THE STYLOID PROCESS IS ELONGATED
· IT IS DUE TO THE OSSIFICATION OF LIGAMENT
WHICH RETAINS SOME CARTILAGE
· THERE IS A ANOTHER TYPE OF EAGLES SYNDROME
CALLED TRAUMATIC EAGLES SYNDROME
· OCCURS DUE TO ANY TRAUMA FRACTURES TO
STYLOHD PROCESS

ETIEOLOGY
It has no specific cause and it is Idiopathic

PATHOLOGY
Ligaments subject to various Ossification over its entire length
Because it retains some cartilage which has the potential to
mature into a normal bone
Thus the styloid process is elongated from its normal length
The normal length of styloid process - 2.0cms
In the eagles syndrome this process elongated more than 2.5cms

CLIN ICAL FEATU RES
INCIDENCE

More common in women above 30 years

Limited lateral excursive
mandibular movement
Pain on turning the head
to one side

the tonsillar fossa and retro
mandibular regions
Pain in the epicentre of T.M.J
Clicking sound during
palpation of T. M. J

INVESTIGATIONS

CLINICAL EXAMINATION
· Pain in the epicentre ofTempro mandibular joint
· Range of motion in Tempro mandibular joint is restricted

RADIOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS

Lateral view ofT.M.J will show the elongation of styloid
process

CLASSIFICATION
Elongated
Pseudo articulated
Segmented

PHYSIOTHERAPY
AIMS OF PT

* To Relieve pain
* To reduce clicking sound
* To reduce functional disability(to improve mouth opening)
* To prevent Recurrance of condition.
* To increase tile Range off motion

Application of LASER

Scanning
* To reduce tile radiating pain over neck and cheek
Probe method
* Applied over epicentre of T.M.J
* It is point specfic

Time of Application- 3Minutes
Output- 4Jou)es per cm2
Wavelength- 904 Nanometre
Recommended sittings 12 sittings

EFFECT OF LASER IN EAGLE'S SYNDROME
* 95% of Radiation is absorbed within first 3 to 4 mm
of tissuee
* And it will increase the capillary permeability

HOME PROGRAMME
* Hot Fermentation over painful area
*Soft diet
* Exercises which improves ADL

SURGICAL MANAGEMENT
* It is needed only, if the conservative management is not
successful
* Stylodotomy (Removal of distal tip of styloid process)
